EX-LAWMAKER ZALDY CO ARRESTED IN PRAGUE — PBBM

Former Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co has been arrested in Prague, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed Thursday night, ending a months-long manhunt tied to multi-million peso graft and malversation charges.

The President announced the development during a press briefing, stating that Co was intercepted by European authorities after attempting to travel without valid documents.

“Nahuli na si Zaldy Co,” Marcos said. “He is now detained in Prague after crossing into the Czech Republic without proper documentation and is currently in the custody of Czech authorities.”

Marcos emphasized that the Philippine government is working in close coordination with Czech officials to ensure a swift extradition process while adhering to international legal protocols.

The arrest stems from an investigation led by the Office of the Ombudsman involving a ₱289.5 million flood control project in Oriental Mindoro. Based on filings before the Sandiganbayan, the case centers on alleged irregularities in the project.

The project in question involved the construction of a road dike in Barangay Tagumpay, Naujan. Investigators claim that the contract was awarded to a private firm with direct ties to Co, raising concerns over conflict of interest.

Co, along with several former officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is facing multiple counts of graft and malversation of public funds.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla had earlier indicated that Co’s arrest was imminent. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) had completed requirements for an Interpol Red Notice, effectively placing the former lawmaker on a global watch list.

While the arrest has been confirmed, government sources said administrative verification is still ongoing as Philippine authorities coordinate with international counterparts to formalize custody transfer procedures.

Co, who resigned amid the controversy, had been considered a fugitive since an arrest warrant was issued earlier this year. He is expected to face trial before the Sandiganbayan upon his return to the Philippines.
