TULFO PROPOSES ₱10K ALLOWANCE FOR STUDENT INTERNS TO EASE FINANCIAL BURDEN

Senator Raffy Tulfo has introduced Senate Bill No. 2157, a legislative measure designed to grant a one-time ₱10,000 financial stipend to eligible student interns across the country.

Dubbed the “Student Internship Allowance Act,” the bill seeks to alleviate the daily financial pressures faced by students during their mandatory practicum, internship, or on-the-job training (OJT) periods. Tulfo emphasized that the grant would assist in covering essential day-to-day costs, including meals and transportation.

The lawmaker pointed out a prevalent issue in the corporate sector, noting that numerous companies profit from the labor and contributions of student interns without offering any monetary compensation or allowance in return.

According to Tulfo, the financial strain of unpaid training heavily impacts students and their families, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. He further shared that a significant number of struggling interns had previously reached out to his public service program, “Raffy Tulfo in Action,” to voice their concerns over the lack of financial backing during their required service hours.

Under the provisions of the proposed bill, the financial aid will be accessible to qualified students from both public and private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Additionally, technical-vocational learners from institutions recognized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will also be eligible, provided that the internship is a strict requirement for their graduation or certification.

Tulfo has urged his colleagues in the Senate to back the passage of Senate Bill No. 2157, stressing the importance of protecting the welfare of student interns and ensuring they receive proper institutional support while gaining industry experience.
