ALEX EALA STUNS WORLD NO. 8 ELINA SVITOLINA TO REACH BERLIN OPEN SEMIFINALS

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala secured a monumental upset early Saturday morning (Philippine time), defeating World No. 8 Elina Svitolina in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of the WTA 500 Berlin Open.

Eala dictated the pace from the opening serve, surging to a rapid 3-0 lead as her Ukrainian opponent struggled to find consistency on the grass surface.

While Svitolina managed to secure a brief service break to close the gap at 4-3, Eala countered with aggressive baseline execution to break back before comfortably wrapping up the first set, 6-3.

The second set featured a similar display of poise from the young Filipina. Svitolina mounted a late-stage rally, narrowing Eala’s commanding 5-2 lead down to 5-4. Showing immense composure under pressure, Eala successfully held her serve in the final game to close out the set, 6-4, and secure the biggest victory of her career.

Svitolina’s power was offset by minor errors throughout the match, finishing the first set with more winners but conceding crucial points via four double faults and eight unforced errors. In contrast, Eala kept her mistakes to a minimum, logging only one double fault and four unforced errors in the opening frame.

“I can’t believe it. I’m in shock right now,” Eala said after the match. “Elina is a huge fighter. I’ve been watching her since I was a kid. It’s an honor to play against her.”

Eala moves on to face Czech player Linda Noskova, the tournament’s eighth seed and World No. 13, in the semifinal round.

Looking past Berlin, Eala’s upcoming schedule is packed. The newly released draw for the Bad Homburg Open confirms she will face World No. 24 Elise Mertens in the singles division.

Additionally, Eala is set to team up with tennis icon Venus Williams in the doubles tournament, opening their campaign against Shuko Aoyama and Liang En-shuo.
