KANLAON VOLCANO JOLTED BY TWO ASH EMISSIONS; ALERT LEVEL 2 MAINTAINED

State volcanologists recorded two separate ash emission events at Kanlaon Volcano early Friday morning, June 19, 2026, prompting authorities to remind the public that the area remains highly unstable.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the activity occurred at 3:32 a.m. and 5:35 a.m., originating directly from the volcano’s summit crater.

The agency reported that the emissions produced distinct grayish ash clouds. These plumes climbed roughly 300 meters into the air before drifting off in a southwesterly direction.

“These events generated grayish plumes that rose 300 meters above the crater before drifting southwest, as captured by the thermal camera at the Lower Masulog observation station (VKLM) and the IP camera at Kanlaon Volcano Observatory–Canlaon City (KVO-CC),” the agency said.

Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2. This status indicates elevated volcanic unrest, meaning sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions could happen at any time.

Because of the continuous hazards associated with the volcano, PHIVOLCS reiterated that entering the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.

Local residents living near Kanlaon are urged to stay alert, monitor local updates, and strictly follow all official safety instructions as experts keep a close watch on the volcano’s behavior.
