Filipina tennis star Alex Eala faces a massive challenge as she goes head-to-head against world No. 2 and two-time Grand Slam champion Elena Rybakina in the second round of the 2026 Berlin Open.
The match is scheduled to start no earlier than 11:30 p.m. Philippine time on Thursday, June 18. Eala advances to this stage following a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 opening-round victory over Croatian veteran Donna Vekic on Wednesday, June 17.
The 21-year-old Filipina entered the tournament as a wildcard participant. Meanwhile, the second-seeded Rybakina earned a direct ticket to the second round courtesy of a first-round bye.
This upcoming match marks the second career face-off between Eala and the 27-year-old Kazakh star, who is considered one of the tour’s premier grass-court players. The duo previously clashed in May at the WTA 1000 Italian Open, where Rybakina won in straight sets during the third round.
Currently ranked world No. 35, Eala aims to avenge that loss and carry over momentum from her Birmingham Classic title victory two weeks ago.
However, pulling off an upset will be a tall order against Rybakina, whose aggressive baseline play and powerful serve make her a dominant force on the WTA Tour.
The Kazakh powerhouse has dropped only two second-round matches all season, with her most recent setback occurring last week in a quarterfinal loss to Katie Boulter at the HSBC Championships.
Rybakina also boasts a stellar grass-court track record, holding a career record of 35 wins and 14 losses on the surface, including qualifiers, emphasizing the steep hurdle Eala must overcome in Berlin.
